How's your CNY?
Posted on

Hey all,

How's your CNY celebration? For the first four days (including CNY eve), I was super busy helping out in spring cleaning, reunion dinner prep and visitation. During the CNY service last week, we learnt that:

1) I can express my love
2) I can take initiative
3) I can discipline wisely.

During this season, I practised (2) a lot. Took initiative to help out, approached my relatives and cousins for a chat. Normally, my cousins and I have lil things to talk. We have "age-gap" as we are 10+ years apart.

God first worked on my relationship with my cousin, Nicole. Last year, I worked for her and it was then we started to care for each other, talk to each other more. In the past, we only meet up together when there's big events like CNY, bday party. Now, we even meet up to make pineapple tarts, shopping, update each other our lives. =)

Now, I'm also getting closer to my other cousins who are 10+ years older than me. =)

Thank you God for this wonderful time during this festive occasion!

You can read more about my CNY here.

Faceoff! (Lies we believe in series)
Posted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

As we walk with God in life, are we believing in some 'truth' which probably are lies in disguise that the devil has placed in our hearts?

As I was thinking about the areas of pruning that God prob wants to work on in our lives this year, are we brave enough to face them?
To allow God to tell us straight in the face that, 'Child, actually in your mind, you are believing in this which is not from Me.' ?
To allow Him to tell us that, 'Child, you can actually do this, don't be fooled by the devil that you can't!'

<2cor11:1-15> It's a fantastic chapter that talks about this area. The art of deception. ~
In (v3), 'But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.'
(v14), 'And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.'

SA Tan is a master of disguise as well. We have definitely fallen into some of his tricks and art, for even many years or even before we come to know God. If we are willing to check ourselves and examine, we perhaps will realise that many of the lies that we have been believing in, have fatal consequences in how we see God, trust God, be victorious in life with God, in able to live a holy and righteous life as He has intended etc.

Personally, sth I realised I believed in subconsciously is, I can never be successful or have breakthrough in certain areas of my life. Hmm.. In perhaps my relationship with my family. I feel that there's this barrier always, I dunno when or how can there be a breakthrough. I prayed but somehow I think I believed that at the end of the day, things wont be better. There must be a great miracle if I want things to be better.
In.. thinking that some things perhaps can never be made right again? eh.. this is a very difficult area for me to express out. haiz..

<2cor10:5> 'We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.'

For ppl who think alot, think along with me ba! God commands us to take captive of every thought and make it obedient to Christ. If we dun even know what are the things that are deceiving and fooling us, how can we then make it obedient to Christ?

To be continued. Pls comment ya?! xD Carrie

Qns discussed:

a) The characteristics of God as the best shepherd
e.g. loving, consistent, fruit of the spirit etc...

b)How does God guide us?

psalm 119:105)

HS(Acts 16:6-7, 2 cor 5:5)

Counsel of Godly people(Ephesians 3:10,joshua 3:9)

*We receive most from God in which area/areas? And which area/areas we do not receive as much from him?

c)When do we not allow God to guide/lead us?
i) when we don't understand
ii) when it is painful(Isaiah 5:1-3)

*What do we want God to prune in our lives this year? Are we ready to let God lead us?

ROWLLLLL.... its me... xD
Posted on Sunday, January 25, 2009

How was steamboat for everyone jus now? Update me update me!!! xD

Today was a rushing here and there time for me. Had to go for meeting then rushed off earlier to start the family reunion dinner in time at 6pm. And thank God! cos I reached there earlier than my family, my mum was really very glad that i managed to reach there early. Prev years i always have bad record of reaching at reunion dinners late.. =X thank God that this year is different.

Today reflection with God reminded me this: God really really loves everyone very very much. Our family, our friends, our CG people, our sheep etc etc. Even if we don't treasure or love them enough, God still do and He is graciously still loving and protecting them even if we fail to do our part. Lets not take His Grace and Mercy for granted amen? Lets continue to allow God to work in us first of all, and then through us to love others even even more.
Revival starts in our hearts.

<2> 'The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.'

few cents tots,
Carrie Scary Chiku

Pondering.....
Posted on Tuesday, January 20, 2009

hey hey! i'm currently in SIM all by myself in one quiet corner... the wind breeze, the cloudy daylight and the quietness is really shiok!

hmmm... has been pondering a lot ever since last week with Sub D meeting and Corporate Prayer meeting. A few questions keep appearing in my mind...

1) Am i repeating my life without engaging with the Holy Spirit and without expectation of what God can do in and with my life?

2) The church is made up of many different "body" parts but are we in ONE spirit?

These 2 questions resound in my heart and mind for a lot of times for the past few days. I really want to do my life with God, to be a victorious and powerful Christian, a Salt and Light that touches people's lives wherever i go. But the truth is that many a times, life demands and rushness caused my heart to be tired and fall into the trap of doing "Spiritual" things rountinely. Week in week out with servce, cg, shepherding, meeting pple can be such a drag certain time and serving can be quite tiring. But thank God for His grace and love that does not condemn. was really reminded by Romans 8: 39-39 "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" which really speaks deep abt God's love for Him and my motivation of serving should be out of a heart to love Him.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-4 "We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."

I was also reminded that many a times many of us do serve God with a good heart but are we in ONE spirit together? This hit me a lot when Ps Jeff asked us to hold hands together to pray for the whole church. And it really strengthen my conviction that to have a strong and united church we need to have a strong and united Care Group!

1 Corinthians 12:11-12 "All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ."

My personal thoughts
Posted on

Few questions were asked during Sub-d meet and the question that struck me was: Do we readily share about our spiritual lives and experiences to one another?

Personally it got me thinking if I’m only relationally close to people but not spiritually. I think I lack the readiness to share about my spiritual life and experiences to people whom I talk to and interact with. It’s like I can hang out with you, fellowship with you, rah-rah with you but at the end of the day, was the time spent together fruitful? We can be close but in terms of spirituality? So, speaking of wanting to know each and everyone of you better, to encourage and edify one another, I hope to work on this aspect of my life. I hope to share more of my spiritual life and experiences to those around me and likewise hear theirs as well.

Lets all not only be relationally close to one another but lets also work on sharing deeper with one another ya?? I was greatly reminded by the cg visions that we all shared during our 1st cg and most of the time connecting, wanting to be more bonded and getting to know one another's life was being shared to the grp...for it also takes individual responsibility and effort to achieve this. Just imagine if everyone of us takes this individual responsibility, hopefully and prayerfully our cg visions that we set for ourselves will come to pass. =)

Then to prayer meet on Friday. As I had consecutive full day classes last week, I was physically drained out which amounts to many things. Thus, I came to prayer meet with a heart of wanting God to refresh me and I even asked for renewal in spirit. Indeed, prayer meet was great and I was spiritually refreshed by God.

Also, God spoke specifically to me about something that has been weighing in my heart for quite some time. I experienced disappointments in people around me and I told God that I wanted to overcome this because this has been affecting my spiritual life which is no good. I need to move on but I really find it a challenge. It’s like it’s not easy to love someone as much as before when u know that the person has failed you or that person has disappointed you in some ways. I tried to love but I still can’t seem to overcome this barrier. God really reminded me on how man can fail us but He will never fail. Why am I choosing to put my trust in people? This shouldn’t be the case. My trust should be placed in God.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.”

God also showed me a picture of a small heart which gradually expanded to a big heart. As I continue to pray, I told Him that I want to move towards to having this big heart. If I can understand God’s love for me, I want to love your people like the way you love me. Even if this is going to be tough or it’s going to take some time, I really want to learn and have a bigger heart in loving those around me.

Yup everything written above is just a personal sharing. =)

Liyi

Studying and Sharing Lives
Posted on

Cg!!

As the semester has already started for most of us, some of us are already seeing projects, assignments and quizzes flying in like nobody's business. The rate at which all these academic stuff are flying at our faces each day is increasing. Instead of just looking at the humongous mountain of notes and books in front of us, why not gather as a CG everyday to study together, help one another in their studies? More than that, shall we share lives together as well?

Let's unite as a CG and spur one another on not only in the context of our studies, but in the spiritual aspects of our lives as well. So let's meet at the benches outside 2.16. Try your best to come and join us in studying together on the days you have school. (if you don't have school on that day, you're welcomed to join us with wide open arms too!)

Let's start this together on Monday, 19 Jan. See u there!!

PS: pls sms me to let me know of what time u can come ok?

thanks so much for your dedication.

Thoughts/ Reflections/ Learnings/ Realisations/ Reminders/ Rebukes/ Encouragements from God
Posted on

Personally I was very touched by God during the time of Corporate Prayer Meet last night. I thanked Him for reminding me many things, and refreshing me with His Presence. I always want to remember that it's only in His Presence will I know His Power.

1. Springclean my heart, my life, oh Lord.
Pastor Jeff was praying for all our lives to be holy and pleasing.
I want to springclean my heart in terms of my motives for doing things, serving God. Im not someone who will be very conscious or aware of some of my inner dialogue, how I really feels towards certain things, not really a thinker.
But I pray that I can take captive of every thought or pretension that might come and rot my heart slowly. Like my hatred towards people, my dad for e.g., I tot I have forgiven him but I realised I have not. Like my opinions towards people or things of the church, I pray for God to come and teach me how to handle. Pastor Jo was mentioning, look upon the cross! And receive love from God 1st.
Hai I think it's not easy for me. But God, if it's really points of growth for me, I pray that you will give me the desire to want to grow in this area.

2. It is God who puts the desire in our hearts to want to change/grow/do sth!
Can read
I am a wave in the sea, God is the God of waves. I may be small and weak on my own but God moves me and He is big and great!
I think another amazing thing I learnt is that sometimes when we think that wanting to change or grow or do certain things come from our humanistic desire or strength, it is not infact!
When we say, 'God I want to change in this area!', then we should also pray that, 'God gives me the 1stly the desire to want to change, then give me also the strength that comes from You to be able to change!'
Because by just changing or trying to overcome with our mere human strength, I can be sure I wont not be so successful, maybe for a while but not for a long time. But God has the power to overcome things of the world, even to death when Jesus overcome the cross and death. =)
I guess it applies to overcoming sin, wanting to grow the desire to serve God, growing the desire of wanting to know God more and hunger for God.
Ask for that desire, pray for that desire!
Yea God, for me, I really pray that you can give me greater desire to know You more, to want to read the WOG more and learn how to apply them in my life. God please give me the desire to want to springclean my life as well, anything that's unpleasing in Your sight, any sin or unholy thoughts, God please give me the desire to want to get rid of them. God, I pray for the desire to want to control and manage my emotions as well, emotions that may come and destroy or tear me down, Lord I pray You will also help me to stand firm and cast them away. In Jesus name, amen.

ops..I think I forgot to sign off ytd. xD its Carrie here.

Surrender
Marc James

Verse 1:

I'm giving you my heart, and all that is within
I lay it all down for the sake of you my King
I'm giving you my dreams, I'm laying down my rights
I'm giving up my pride for the promise of new life

Chorus:

And I surrender all to you, all to you
And I surrender all to you, all to you

Verse 2:
I'm singing you this song, I'm waiting at the cross
And all the world holds dear, I count it all as loss
For the sake of knowing you the glory of your name
To know the lasting joy even sharing in your pain

PRESENTING TO YOU...

OUR FIRST CG IN 2009

of cos, missing myself (the camera man) and carrie who went off earlier for STM meeting. :)

we had a God-filled session, sharing, truthfully, about the heart conditions which we are dealing with currently and the visions and dreams we have for this year.

It is such a joy to have walked 2008 with God, here we are as a caregroup asking for God to be with us as we live our 2009, looking forward to victories and breakthroughs with God!

I have designed mine and sticked mine on the wall, where i will see like (almost) everyday! If you have forgotten what this is... this is what you have done for yourself- ASK and Personal/CG Vision.
The saying goes,"Out of Sight, Out of Mind". Who says plans made for the new year will never come to pass? You are a conquerer in Christ! So why not, take the faith, take the action and live a life of breakthroughs this year!
If you have done yours, i encourage you to post on the blog too! :D

hey jas, han, ben, huiru.. you can do the same too. No one gets left behind!

WE MUST BE INTENTIONAL
Posted on

hello bros and sis,

a short article but really reminds us that spiritual growth is not like a growing up process which occurs naturally, in fact it is a process that occurs only intentionally.

IN SHORT,
spiritual grow is intentional.. read on.. :)

Spiritual Growth Must Be Intentional-by Rick Warren
Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:12-13 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***

The truth is that growth in the human soul requires a commitment to grow. A person must want to grow, decide to grow, and make an effort to grow.

Spiritual growth begins with a decision. It doesn’t have to be a complex decision, but it does have to be sincere. When Jesus’ followers decided to choose his way, they didn’t understand all the implications of their decision. They simply expressed a desire to follow him, and that was the beginning of an exciting journey of the soul. Jesus took that simple but sincere decision and built on it.

In Philippians 2:12-13, Paul offers insight into spiritual growth while speaking to people who already believe: “... continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (NIV).

Notice that it says “work out” – not “work on” – your salvation. There is nothing you can do to save yourself spiritually; Christ took care of that by his life, death, and resurrection. The important thing to note is that God has a part in our growth – but so do we. We must make an intentional effort to grow.

have you made good plans to grow for this year?
let's be intentional about our growth! amen?

Chew Chor Meng's Testimony
Posted on Monday, January 5, 2009

'I may need a wheelchair'
But actor Chew Chor Meng refuses to let muscular atrophy get him down
By Tan Dawn Wei

Actor Chew Chor Meng already has great difficulty climbing stairs and he struggles to lift his four-year-old daughter. Soon, he may even lose his ability to walk. But the 40-year-old, who broke the news that he has spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, or Kennedy's disease, last Friday night, is refusing to let this debilitating disease strike him down.

THE DISEASE
Twitching, tremors and muscle cramps, progressing to weakness and wasting in the legs, trunk, arms, shoulders, neck and face. These are the debilitating effects of spinal bulbar muscular atrophy, or Kennedy's disease, which dramatically affects one's walking, speech and swallowing, usually over a long period of time.
... more

'My doctor says my life is not in danger, but in the next five to 20 years, my condition will get worse and I may have to use a walking stick or a wheelchair,' he told reporters in Mandarin after giving a testimony in his church, Renewal Centre, in Serangoon.

'But whatever happens, even if I'm confined to a wheelchair, I still want to see my daughters grow up,' he said, breaking down.

Named after Dr William R. Kennedy, an American physician who was among the first to determine this genetic disease, Kennedy's disease is rare and currently incurable.

This progressive neuromuscular disorder inflicts one in 40,000 people worldwide, with symptoms usually appearing between the ages of 30 and 50.

Men tend to develop symptoms while women tend to be just carriers. It does not affect life expectancy.

Mr Chew, the father of two girls aged four and six, had kept quiet about his illness after he was diagnosed in September this year.

He told only a handful of close friends and even wanted to keep it from his bosses at TV station Media- Corp. But he changed his mind when he realised his deteriorating condition would make it hard for him to work.

One of the first he told was good friend, radio DJ Dennis Chew, 34.

He received a call from Mr Chew the day he was diagnosed and remembered the actor sounding quite 'down and depressed' over the phone. 'He told me his illness is incurable. I was very, very sad. I thought, why would something like this happen to him?' he told The Sunday Times yesterday.

The radio DJ was also asked to keep it a secret, but Mr Chew's slow gait was becoming increasingly obvious to those around him.

The actor's wife, Deon, 34, told Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao last Friday that she is already prepared for the worst.

'I told him, if it is hard on him, then don't work,' she said.

'People think he is being anti-social because he often doesn't eat with his colleagues. But that's because he can't even walk the short distance to the canteen, and always needs someone to get him packed lunch.'

Mr Dennis Chew, too, said the Don't Worry Be Happy star's illness has not gone unnoticed.
'Some people ask me, 'is Chor Meng unwell?' I just say, 'back problem',' he said.

Mr Chew has been suffering from back pain since he hurt it while filming a drama series in 1997. He had gone to a slew of doctors and Chinese physicians since, but with little result. At one point, he even thought he had suffered a stroke.

In some ways, he is glad that the mystery of his backaches has finally been solved, he said.
But he found it hard to accept at the beginning.

'I felt scared thinking about my future. And I was worried about how my family would be affected if the news leaked,' said Mr Chew, who won the talent contest Star Search in 1990 and has consistently been on MediaCorp's list of top 10 popular actors.

He wanted to break the news on MediaCorp's award show, Star Awards, next year. 'But I know I can't keep such things secret. When I went out recently, some people had come up to me to ask what was wrong with my legs.

'I know, as an actor, if I can let more people know about this disease, that's a good thing. But I also hope to keep a patient's last dignity.'

His mother, especially, has not taken to the news too well. She sits in the living room and cries, blaming herself for passing on bad genes to him, he said.

She lives with him and his family in a three-storey townhouse in Hougang.
Religion is keeping him going during this difficult time. Mr Dennis Chew said his friend recently became a Christian - something that made Mr Chew's wife extremely happy. She has been a Christian since they were married in 2000.

Mr Dennis Chew and a few other close friends, including artistes Zoe Tay, Aileen Tan, Ivy Lee, Li Nanxing, Kym Ng, Chen Liping and Rayson Tan recently attended the baptism of the actor and his two daughters.

At that time, Mr Chew could not join his wife on stage because he had difficulty climbing up the stairs.

Mr Chew himself said that since becoming a Christian, he has become more calm and has given up swearing. He does not blame anyone for his fate.
'I'll try my best and let God do the rest.'

Mr Dennis Chew said of his friend, whom he calls 'Ah Hia' (older brother in Teochew): 'He has been very strong and he doesn't let his illness get him down, or get angry because of it.'
But he worries most about seeing Mr Chew's condition deteriorate.

'I really want to see him get better. He hasn't been as gui ling jing guai (Mandarin for mischievous) recently. I hope he will get his energy back.'

Mr Chew himself seems to be taking it in his stride.

'I told my mum, 'when the time comes, buy me a nicer wheelchair',' he said.

CALLING ALL CGMATES!

hahaha, elaine feedbacked that my entry regarding the preparation for cg on thursday IS TOO LONG! boohoohoo... haha.

BUT anyhow, do read it! 'cos i want to help you all get started on it mah.. :)

BE GOOD, COS JESUS LOVES YOU!

**************

by the way, its first day of school today, for me, junyao and elaine (anyone else?). i really try a lot harder to start awake and really open my ears to listen and participate in the lecture :) woahs, guess every step towards being a salt and light is not easy, but we ought to give our best. Me and junyao printed alot of notes today in the computer lab at level 5 too. It's really no fun vying with many many others who wants to use the (pathetic) two printers. Our integrity was greatly challenged as to whether we should cut queue! I am really glad we stick to what was right and biblical. :) I ended my day with meetup with elaine. We enjoyed ourselves over a simple and short dinner. I thank God for this girl in my life. Building relationships is never an easy process that is why every drop of effort we put in for each other counts. I believe elaine will agree with me for this as well.

Dear friends, let's persevere in giving to the relationships God has entrusted to us be it our family, our friends, our caregroup mates or to God. God did not bless us with these relationships to us for nothing. (be it we liked it or not) :)

to help you,

in this new year-

think of a family member to understand more this year

think of a friend to share Jesus' love with this year

think of a caregroup member (whom you aren't very close to) to deepen your friendship with this year

think of how you can love God more this year!

HAVE FUN IN THIS! :)

love you,

jesline

CAREGROUP!! :D
Posted on Sunday, January 4, 2009

hello everyone~!

jasmine, hanyun, liping, huimin, jolene, shuning, maurise, huiru, kezia, jieai, liyi, elaine, carrie, jesline, shawn, benson, alex, junyao, ben tay, justin, samuel!!

care group this week is on....

DAY: THURSDAY
DATE: 8TH JAN 09
TIME: 6PM
VENUE: SMU(THE BUILDING OPPOSITE HOTEL RENDEVOUS) meet @ MR BEAN
*************************************************************************************
things you need to prepare!(pen them down and bring it for CG)
1) A HEART that is ready for God
(pray for your heart in the week, God prepare my heart to hear from you!)
2) your 2008 reflections
here are some helping questions, you can use to get you started for the reflections! you need not do all, just choose the ones appropriate and you can add to the list of questions as well.
-what is the most decision you have made last year? how did it affected your life?
-what is one lesson you have learnt through a bad experience last year?
-what is the most memorable experience, why?
-if you were to live 2008 again, what is one thing you will do differently?
-what is one good/bad habit you have cultivated last year? how do you want to improve/get rid of it this year?
-what is one aspect of God's character you have understood more last year?

3) vision for yourself and for the caregroup in 2009
to help you get started!

definition of vision-''the ability to imagine how a country, society, industry, etc. could develop in the future and to plan in a suitable way'' (cambridge dictionaries online)

examples:
personal vision-i want to be more hardworking, giving more attention to my studies. i want to take care of my health by eating balancely and exercising, i want to be a better child at home by taking effort to honour my parents and to take care of my siblings, i want to gain understanding of the world i am living...

caregroup vision-i want to build a more caring cg, i want to build a more word-centred cg, i want to build a more prayerful cg...

NOTE: your visions may be related to what you have penned down for your ASK.

4) prepare your ASK
according to jasmine's post earlier on... we understand that-

A refers to ATTITUDE (grumble less, be positive, encourage, give more, more tolerant..)
S refers to SKILLS (play the guitar, coordinating/organising, teaching,driving,cooking..)
K refers to KNOWLEDGE (current affairs, technology, defends of your faith/apologetics,imaging,photography..)

you need not come out with a unreasonable amount of areas that you want to work on. can pen them all down and then be realistic in the ones you will want to work on this year. :)

Let's encourage each other in doing this reflection/vision/ASK with the right attitude! Having set a reasonable direction for our life this year, let's also spur each other on in growing in the areas we have planned. We want to be moving ahead with God this year, not standstill or regress. amen?

this is true,
if we have not moving forward, we are moving backwards!

love,
jesline

My thoughts
Posted on

Okay.. it's time for me to retire. :phew: After I joined this caregroup in end of July, I thought of contributing something. So I thought of having a CG blog. Before we started this blog, we seeked advice from the leader as to how to carry out this thing. Initially, I was afraid that everyone is doing this out of impulse. I surfed some caregroup blogs and saw that the blog was not updated. That time, I was worried that our CG blog will end up to be like theirs. But luckily, you guys are so kind enough to visit our CG blog constantly, especially flooding at our tagboard.

I like to encourage everyone to use this CG blog as a platform not only post announcement and tag at the tagboard, but to blog more about your testimonies, CG happenings, or anything that God has spoken to you.

Tangerine Tan's handover list:
  1. If you find that the blog is a lil boring (no one blogging), try to remind everyone to blog. If not, you can post some jokes/ stories. These jokes that I've blogged can be found at:
    http://www.broadcaster.org.uk/section2/jokes/christianjokes.html http://www.christian-jokes.org/
    http://www.cleanjoke.com/humor/Funny-Stuff-Christian-Jokes.html

  2. Please update the e-sermon. Click on the "Template" tab.

Please get the e-sermon template HERE
If you need me to teach you face-to-face, let me know
  3. Please do not mess with the html code. If you do not know anything, please approach me before it's too late..
  4. Please update the members' blog urls as some have deleted their blogs, and ask if our new sisters and brothers have a blog.
Love,
Tangerine Tan
